Over the past twenty-five years I have cared for numerous women and delivered over a thousand babies.

My medical journey started in 1989 when I graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. I completed my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1992 at Sinai Hospital in Detroit.

I obtained board certification in 1995 and have continually maintained the certification.

In 2011 I became certified as a Davinci robotic surgeon becoming one of the first in my hospital system.

Over the past 25+ years I have cared for thousands of women and delivered well over a thousand babies.

However, years of hard work as a physician, mom, and wife took its toll on me and I stopped taking care of myself. I developed ulcerative colitis, insulin resistance or “pre-diabetes,” arthritis and early obesity. When I turned 55 I realized it was TIME TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF.

I read books, articles, blogs, and anything I could to help myself. This all led me to determine that the chemicals which got into my body through food, skin and my environment were making me sick. Especially processed foods like sugar!

I decided to embark on a new lifestyle.

I will never call it a diet, because diets fail. A lifestyle can change but that isn’t failure.

So what did I do? I cut out processed foods and more. I first started by eliminating sugar and carbohydrates, including all fruit. I bought only hormone free, antibiotic free meats and dairy and ate butter not margarine. I read food labels and baked every weekend so I could still have bread, pizza dough and dessert.

It wasn’t easy but it was easier than every other diet I had been on in the past, and there were many! Next I tried to eliminate chemicals in my skin care and hair care products. At home I already used as much natural cleaning and laundry products as I could find.

Approximately 4 weeks later my joints stopped hurting, I felt less bloated, and started to drop some weight. Six months later my blood sugars were normal, my triglyceride level had dropped significantly and I had energy again. I not only felt better but I looked healthier to others. Patients and friends started noticing my transformation and asked if I could share my new lifestyle with them.

That’s when I decided to share my knowledge and new expertise in the office and on social media by starting Dr. Debbie’s Wellness.

My energy level improved so much that when a colleague whom runs a non-profit asked me for help, I was able to say yes.

I am on the board of Detroit2Nepal a nonprofit that helps build birthing centers, schools and toilets in the villages of the Nepalese mountains. The foundation also has a Detroit initiative EVO Detroit, which helps support community projects. The Say clinic for women and WNUC community radio are two of those projects.

Say is a free clinic for uninsured women in Highland Park. I run the gynecology clinic there. WNUC is the only community radio station in Detroit and I host a radio show entitled, Dr.’s Making a House Call. I interview other healthcare professionals in an effort to educate the people of Detroit who may not have any other means to get health information.

New projects are on the horizon. I will be on the Blaine Fowler morning show, WDVD 96.3, Monday mornings with a segment called, “maternity Mondays.”
I am also working on a podcast entitled, Talking Taboos.

You can find links to all of these and more at the top of this site.
I have my favorite recipes, skincare and reference books for a healthy, chemical free lifestyle. I will be updating and adding on a regular basis.
